Nourita

Customer Service Adviser turned Junior Product Designer, it was with Love Circular that I took my first steps in breaking into the world of design. Despite a lack of previous design experience, I learned to use skills from my background in science to complement my budding creative abilities throughout the course and, approximately 6 months after graduating, managed to land my very first design role.

Fun fact: I used to think I could control ants. 🐜

What's your career story so far?

It’s crazy to think just last year I was a Customer Service Adviser at a private pharmacy, and a year before that, in my final year of studying Biomedical Science at university. My path to Product Design has by no means been a straight-forward one. I have always had a passion for creativity, but it is only recently where I’ve placed myself in environments that nurture that. I think the best decision I have ever made for myself was to not only listen to what I was truly passionate about but believe in it enough to take that first step in changing my career. Prior to Love Circular, I had no design experience at all, but you surprise yourself with what you can accomplish when you allow your natural instincts to take over.

A guest live session Nourita held explaining other aspects of her story in landing a Junior Product Designer job.

What's your proudest achievement as a designer?

For me, it’s landing my first design role. Given the lack of junior roles at the time of my job search, I was competing against experienced designers and faced much rejection. So, when I was successful in landing a junior position that was originally advertised for mid-senior designers, it validated that my work and I were good enough to belong in the world of design. It was a great feeling to finally officially call myself a designer.

What's a typical day in your life?

A typical day for me looks like working on my task/ ticket assigned by one of the Product Owners on my team, and I’ll usually work on this throughout the week to present at our weekly Design Catchup where I receive feedback or direction on what to tackle next.

How's your desk setup looking?

I’m working from the foot of my bed at the moment! But I do look forward to setting up a cosy desk corner soon.

How do you stay inspired?

I like reading The Desk Magazine by Tobias van Schneider – an online blog featuring thought-provoking articles covering topics from design, psychology, and productivity. I think my favourite reads have been “The best designers are artists” and “On finding your niche”.

What advice would you give yourself if you were to start over again?

Stop focusing on the perfect portfolio and just get something out there for hiring managers to look at! Also, reach out to hiring managers sooner.

What's your favourite album/playlist at the moment?

I’m just coming out of a K-Pop high and have had my moody playlist on repeat, listening to artists like Within Temptation, Evanescence, Linkin Park etc. So, a bit dramatic. I think the best designers have a bit of drama about them though!
